(Episode 264: 9 minutes 33) Last week the ABS released the unemployment statistics, showing a smaller than expected increase to 5.7%. It’s another indicator that the Australian economy is faring better than most other OECD countries.

Yet many people out of work are not included in the statistics. David Richardson, a senior research fellow at The Australia Institute, calls these people the hidden unemployed. So how many of them are there and what is the real unemployment statistic?
